SUMMARY:Michael Chandler Lecture Douglas L. Medin - Northwestern University Culture and Thought: Native American Relational Epistemologies
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:There is now substantial evidence that culture affects both the content and processes of thought. This talk describes an ongoing collaborative research project with the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin and the American Indian Center of Chicago focusing on biological cognition and science education. Studies with biological experts (hunters and fisherfolk), and less expert children and adults converge in suggesting clear cultural differences in ways of conceptualizing (the rest of) nature. An analysis of children's books provides further converging evidence for a relational orientation that may support systems level thinking.
