Tri-Council Agencies

The major external granting agencies for Canadian graduate students are within the “Tri-Council” group – the Natural Science & Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Science & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Award amounts range from approximately $17,500 to $50,000 and may be for one to four years. These award amounts may be topped up for individuals who also receive an MSFHR award to potentially $42,000 in total. Only the top graduate students with a minimum first class standing (80% or higher at UBC) in each of the last two years of full-time study are nominated.

Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research

The MSFHR Research Trainee Program is intended to provide research training awards to highly qualified individuals who wish to pursue a research career in any health research area where the goal is to benefit human health. Awards are available for students studying at the Master's and PhD level and for Post Doctoral Fellowship training. All awards consist of a stipend and a research and travel allowance. The basic annual award is $25,000. Partial funding from this award may be used to top-up awards received from the Tri-Council group to a total of $42,000.
